The Advanced Reactor Engineering (ARE) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division 
(RNSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a candidate to fill an R&D assistant 
position to support the development of advanced thermal hydraulics capabilities, including models, 
codes and validation experiments for system thermal hydraulics analysis.

RNSD conducts leading edge science, technology, and engineering research and development (R&D) 
for current and advanced nuclear reactors and fuel cycles; storage, transport, and disposal of spent 
nuclear fuel; non-reactor nuclear systems (e.g., accelerators, irradiation facilities, fusion energy 
systems); and nuclear security and defense programs. The ARE Group delivers exceptional solutions 
to challenging fluid, heat transfer and irradiation engineering problems through a unique integration 
of design, simulation, fabrication, and experimentation expertise.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with experienced thermal hydraulic engineering R&D staff to 
develop thermal hydraulic simulation models and analysis tools for a variety of nuclear reactor and 
thermal energy systems. Responsibilities may include:
-Development of thermal hydraulic and coupled thermal hydraulic / neutronic system models for 
steady state calculations and transient analyses under relevant reactor accident scenarios for both 
conventional light water reactors and advanced next-generation reactor designs,
-Model development and analyses using intermediate fidelity subchannel-resolved thermal hydraulic 
and coupled calculation tools, taking advantage of ORNL’s high-performance computing capabilities,
-Development of integrated multiphysics code systems using system, subchannel, and computational 
fluid dynamics (CFD) codes to represent thermal hydraulics phenomena,
-Development of experimental facility designs, test plans, instrumentation and/or associated 
procedures and documentation,
-Construction, operation and decommissioning of experimental facilities,
-Component design optimization, performance and safety evaluations,
-Verification, validation, uncertainty quantification and documentation of the model/experiment 
-Post-processing of model/experiment results to develop effective visualizations.

The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team environment to leverage ORNL’s 
capabilities in thermal/fluid analysis, experimental methods, instrumentation and sensors, reactor 
physics, nuclear fuel performance, and advanced computing. The candidate is expected to fully 
document work in technical reports, conference papers and publications in high-quality journals, be 
able to work independently as well as in a team environment and contribute to the identification and 
development of proposals. 

Qualifications Required

The successful candidate will have a PhD in nuclear, mechanical, or chemical engineering or 
engineering physics with greater than 1 year of demonstrated experience in nuclear reactor thermal 
hydraulics system and/or subchannel analysis. Candidates must also have demonstrated problem-
solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of engineering problems, and an 
established aptitude in the application and development of engineering models of nuclear reactor 

Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation, and written) are required to enable effective 
interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. The candidate is expected to 
demonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, 
thoroughly document work performed, effectively interface with project sponsors, and contribute to 
the identification and development of proposals

Qualifications Desired

The ideal candidate should have more than 2 years of demonstrable experience in the development of 
thermal hydraulics models using common systems and subchannel codes. The ideal candidate should 
have a strong fundamental understanding of multiphase fluid flow and heat transfer phenomena. The 
ideal candidate should also have demonstrated experience in closure model development, model 
validation, software implementation, and software quality assurance.

Preferred candidates will have experience with application and extension of the analysis capabilities 
of industry standard system thermal hydraulics codes (RELAP, TRACE, TRAC, MELCOR, 
SAS4A/SASSYS-1, etc.), subchannel thermal hydraulics codes (COBRA, VIPRE, etc.), and/or CFD 
codes (STAR-CCM+, CFX, FLUENT, OpenFOAM, etc.). Demonstrated experience in multiphysics 
integration of thermal hydraulic and neutronics simulation tools is preferred. Demonstrated 
experience in multiscale integration of thermal hydraulics tools is beneficial.

Prior experience working in Linux environments on large commercial cluster computing architectures 
is preferred.
