TitleMechanics of upper airway collapse in obstructive sleep apnea
CategoryPostDoc Position
EmployerMedical College of Wisconsin
LocationUnited States, Wisconsin, Milwaukee
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateFriday, March 15, 2019
A postdoctoral position is available at the Marquette University and The
Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Biomedical Engineering. The
position requires a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical
engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field. The ideal candidate
will have experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-
structure interaction (FSI) simulations. Strong candidates lacking experience
with CFD and/or FSI simulations may also be considered, but must have a strong
background in mathematical modeling.

This research project is aimed at developing a quantitative understanding of
the relationship between upper airway collapse and anatomic variability in
patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The post-doctoral fellow will be
responsible for (1) creating anatomically-accurate models of the upper airway
and surrounding tissues based on computed tomography (CT) scans of obstructive
sleep apnea patients; (2) performing FSI simulations to quantify how upper
airway geometry and tissue properties impact its mechanical stability; and (3)
perform in vitro experiments in collapsible replicas of the human upper airway
to validate the FSI simulations.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a
multidisciplinary environment that involves close collaboration between
engineers and clinical otolaryngologists. The post-doctoral fellow will be
expected to play a leading role in data analysis and manuscript preparation
for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Therefore, excellent written and
oral communications skills are required. Competitive applicants will have a
strong publication record.

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is the largest private research
institution in Wisconsin and the 4th largest private medical school in the
United States. In FY2017, MCW invested $234M in research, teaching, and
training (

The Department of Biomedical Engineering
( is a vibrant partnership
between the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University. Its
research mission is to foster the development and application of novel
technologies in biomedical research through a close collaboration between
clinicians and engineers.

Salary will be based on NIH scale commensurate with background and experience.
MCW is an equal opportunity employer.

Interested candidates should send a PDF file with CV and names of three
references to Dr. Guilherme Garcia (

Please apply by March 15, 2019. The successful candidate should be available
