Project description:
The Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace technology is strengthening its role in
the Copper Matte Smelting  industry.  Its  main  feature  is  the  injection  of
 the  process  gas  from  the  top  directly  into  a  molten slag bath through
a lance: the aim of this solution is to create a highly agitated bath in order 
to increase the smelting reaction rates. The furnace operates at high
temperature, with the slag at round 1200°C, therefore the submerged section of
the lance is subjected to a strong thermal stress which leads often to
structural failures. The cooling of the lance is hence one of the crucial issues 
of the TSL injection and a deep understanding of the heat transfer process is
needed.

Job purpose:
Based on an extensive literature research the first aim of the thesis is to
 define the state of the art for the heat transfer analysis in TSL, with
particular focus on the slag side, where phenomena as slag solidification and
splashing take place. 
After an accurate simplification of the problem the student has to develop and
validate a 1D model to describe the thermal behavior of the lance with focus
on the slag solidification process. The 1D model will be then implemented as BC
in a CFD model.

Requirements/Skills:
• Studies  in  engineering  (mechanical,  process,  chemical,  aerospace, 
energy, metallurgy), mathematics, physics and related fields
• Interest and knowledge in fluid dynamic and heat transfer
• Experience with ANSYS Fluent,Matlab, C, or python is preferred
• Fluent in English, German is a plus
