The Space and Fluids Engineering Research (SAFER) lab at New Jersey 
Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a highly qualified student for a PhD 
fellowship with a starting date in the summer or fall semester of 2019. The 
ideal candidate should be a highly motivated individual with outstanding 
writing skills and a strong background in math, algorithms, and computer 

The objectives of the doctoral project are the followings:
•  Derive and prove the theoretical feasibility of a novel scheme for 
variable resolution in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code based on 
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)
•  Design an algorithm based on the abovementioned scheme and implement the 
algorithm into the CPU version of the SPH code “DualSPHysics”
•  Use Graphics Processing Units (GPU) language to derive the GPU version of 
the algorithm

DualSPHysics is a state-of-the-art SPH code developed to study fluid 
problems with a high computational cost and heavily used in both academia 
and the industry. The DualSPHysics project is the product of an 
international collaboration among many universities and institutions. Among 
these, the University of Vigo (Spain), the University of Manchester (UK), 
the University of Parma (Italy), the Technical Institute of Lisbon 
(Portugal), the University of Ghent (Belgium), and the New Jersey Institute 
of Technology (USA).

The prospective student is expected to travel regularly to Italy under an 
agreement between NJIT and the University of Parma for a shared PhD 
mentorship. The point of contact and advisor at University of Parma is Dr. 
Renato Vacondio ( Upon fulfilling all the 
requirements of the joint PhD program, the student will be conferred two PhD 
degrees within the same doctoral project: one in Mechanical Engineering from 
NJIT and one in Civil Engineering from University of Parma.

Individuals applying for the position must have a MS degree in 
Mechanical/Civil/Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Physics, 
Computer Science, or similar fields with a minimum GPA of 3.50/4.00. A 
background in applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, algorithms and 
programming (C++ and Fortran) is imperative. Some background in fluid 
mechanics and heat transfer is also highly desired. Additional skills such 
as GPU programming (CUDA and/or other languages) will be considered as a 
plus. An overall TOEFL IBT score of 79 or larger (with speaking score>23) or 
an IELTS band score of 6.5 or larger is required. Provision of the GRE 
scores are strongly encouraged and will be considered as a plus. Females and
