A post-doctoral position in Computational Fluid Dynamics is available at the 
University of Louvain (UCLouvain) in Belgium. The topic concerns turbulent 
convection at open-top  reservoirs with phase change (evaporation across the 
free surface plus boiling). Relevant applications include thermal power plants, 
refrigeration systems, boilers, spent fuel pools of nuclear power stations and 

The specific objectives of the proposed research are the following.
1)  Development of appropriate mathematical models that collectively describe 
all hydrodynamic and transport phenomena occurring below and above the free surface.
2)  Development of algorithms and implementation of related software.
3)  Performance of numerical simulations, via high-performance computing.
4)  Calculation of phase-change rates for a variety of configurations.

Particular emphasis will be given in the modelling and simulation of:  
•  turbulent convection inside the water pool at high Rayleigh numbers,
•  evaporation across the free surface,
•  motion and descent of the free surface, 
•  nucleation and boiling at solid boundaries.

The starting date can be as early as September 20 2020, and no later than 
November 1st 2020. The initial duration of the appointment is for 12 months, 
renewable twice for a period of 12 months each. Therefore, the overall duration 
can be up to 36 months. 

The postdoctoral fellow will join the Multi-phase and Reacting Flows group of

The postdoctoral fellowship includes the fellow’s salary, full insurance and 
health benefits, public-transportation cost and coverage of expenses for 
participation in conferences & workshops.

Required qualifications and skills:
- a PhD degree in the thematic area of modelling and simulation of turbulent 
flows. Background and expertise in two-phase flows is highly desirable.
- good programming skills (in C/C++ or Fortran),
- strong mathematical background,
- ability to efficiently communicate, read and write in English.
