TitleHigh-Fidelity Simulation for Aircrafts (Transonic, Supersonic)
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerUniversity of Calgary
LocationCanada, AB, Calgary
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, April 01, 2021
Description:
The Computational Fluid & Structural Mechanics group (CFSMgroup) and High-Speed
Aerodynamics and Energy Research group at the University of Calgary has an open
fully-funded Ph.D. position in High-Fidelity Simulation for Aircrafts during
Transonic and Supersonic Flight Regimes.

The project focuses on the development of high-fidelity numerical framework for
turbulent compressible flows with application to a full vehicle simulation. During
this work the fundamental questions related to shock wave boundary layer
interaction, laminar-turbulent transition, will be investigated. The application
of the Reduced Order Modeling (ROM) techniques will also be explored.

The Ph.D. role will be to:

- implement the turbulence model based on Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) and
Stabilized techniques into in-house finite-element based code
- validate the numerical framework based on the cases from the AIAA Lift and Drag
Prediction Workshops, including the simulation of the Common Research Model (CRM)
- validate the numerical framework based on the NASA Juncture Flow experiment
- perform full-vehicle simulation during transonic and supersonic flight regimes

The potential candidates should have:

- a strong background in numerical methods, fluid mechanics and gas dynamics
- prior experience with turbulence modeling and/or analysis and/or theory (or
completed courses in turbulence)
- experience in developing numerical models, codes, and computation algorithms
- experience with CFD using FEM or FVM
- strong hands-on experience with computing in Fortran, C/C++, Python, or other
languages
- familiarity with at least one mesh generation tool (Gmsh, ANSA, Pointwise, or
other)
- experience with parallel computing (e.g. MPI, CUDA)
- strong interest and self-motivation to perform cutting-edge research and conquer
challenges in real-world engineering and to publish high-impact papers.

CFSMgroup and High-Speed Aerodynamics and Energy Research group are a part of the
University of Calgary Aerospace Network (UCAN), https://www.ucalgary.ca/aerospace
, that involves collaboration with national and international academic
institutions, industrial partners and governmental agencies, including NASA,
Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), US
Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Lockheed Martin, Peraton, and
more. Research projects are also sponsored by various Canadian small- and medium-
sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups in aerospace, which is a potential
employment opportunity after the degree completion.

Position is available as soon as January 2021 (the actual start date can be
negotiated). Please send to Dr. Artem Korobenko (artem.korobenko@ucalgary.ca) the
following documents:

- up-to-date CV
- unofficial transcripts
- unofficial English language test results (if applicable)
- one-page cover letter.  In your cover letter, please include projects you worked
on and a short proposal (few paragraphs) for the potential research topic that you
would like to work on during your program at the University of Calgary related to
the project description.

Due to the nature of the work and industry collaborations the preferences will be
given to the applicants from North America, Europe and Japan.
