Closure DateWednesday, March 01, 2023
A fully-funded Ph.D. student position is available in the Environmental Fluid Laboratory
( in the School of the Coastal Environment at Coastal Carolina University, starting
on January 2023.

Aerodynamics of insects flight: The physiological and aerodynamic mechanisms improving flight endurance in
insects are unclear due to limited understanding of the complex aerodynamic interactions between them and
the wind during forward flapping flight. The research will examine the flight behavior, aerodynamics and
energetic beetles focusing on how intraspecific variation in body mass affect the ability to disperse large
distances by flight.

We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student who is interested in fluid dynamics in the specific area of
bio-inspired flows. The goal is to study the aerodynamics of insect flight using experimental (i.e.: optical flow
measurement techniques: 3D-PIV; 3D-PTV) and computational (i.e.: ANSYS) tools.
