Workplace Description
The Centre on Sustainable Energy (SE) supports the development of devices and
methods for generation, storage, and distribution of energy solutions at low
environmental impact. This will be done in the perspective of energy
sustainability, of systems and solutions that respect the environment and the
quality of life, of solutions with a lower impact on health and on environmental
pollution levels. The ground for the Centre on “Sustainable Energy” is based on
the Decarbonization targets, which will demand for more flexibility of the
energy system, through new gas and power grids and using energy vectors and
storage solutions, as enablers for the wide penetration of renewables.
Job Description
SE Center is involved through the Battery and Electrification Technologies (BET)
unit in the development of advanced battery technologies, from single cells to
large modules and systems. The selected candidate will contribute to projects on
the development and testing of functional components/systems of battery
technologies, including Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs), Solid State Batteries
(SSBs) and Lithium Batteries (LIBs). The activities will focus on: design and
optimization of layouts and components for test benches and for battery systems,
modeling and prototyping of battery stacks/modules, definition of testing
protocols based on standards and safety procedures, testing and validation of
cells, modules and battery systems.
In addition, the selected candidate will support the design and commissioning of
new laboratory infrastructures of the Center SE that will be located in
Rovereto.
The activities of the successful candidate will focus on:
Design new customized test rigs (mainly for redox flow batteries, integrating
power electronics, sensors, piping, pumps, heaters/coolers, etc) and supervise
their construction;
Design and test components for redox flow batteries (bipolar plates, cells,
stacks) also supported by 3D modeling tools (CFD, structural FEA);
Define test protocols based on test requirements, design of experiment,
applicable standards and safety requirements;
Plan and perform electrical/electrochemical characterization and tests on cells,
stacks/modules or/and battery systems, also producing technical reports;
Design, test and validate new energy storage systems focusing in particular on
redox flow batteries and hybrid energy storage systems integrating different
ESS;
Contribute to the selection and techno-economic evaluation of new laboratory
equipment;
Support the design and commissioning of new laboratory infrastructures in
Rovereto at Progetto Manifattura.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
MSc in Mechatronic, Electrical, Chemical Engineering or other equivalent
background;
Know-how on batteries or electrochemical systems;
Solid know-how on electrical testing, electrochemical techniques and accelerated
tests for batteries based on practical laboratory experience (use of cyclers,
potentiostats, climate chambers, etc);
Experience in the design, operation and management of testing equipment and test
rigs;
Practical knowledge of 3D CAD (e.g., Solidworks) and CAE tools (e.g., Ansys
Workbench, Ansys Fluent);
Some knowledge on process design, PFD and P&ID preparation;
High affinity for hands-on activities and the ability to identify and solve
problems;
Data analysis skills (using e.g., python, Origin, etc.);
Good knowledge of written and spoken English;
Teamwork approach, good communication and relational skills.
Furthermore, the following elements will be positively evaluated:
PhD in Engineering, Physics, or other related degrees with specialization on
batteries;
Experience in battery system design (e.g., for RFBs or LIBs);
Good knowledge of written and spoken Italian.
