The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive is the European 
Union’s main legislative instrument focused on the improvement 
of the energy performance of buildings within the member 
states. As the directive’s main standard, EN 15251 includes 
information about optimizing thermal, air quality, acoustic and 
visual comfort to help designers to make energy calculations 
for all aspects of the environment which can influence energy 
use.

For this, CFD simulations can be extremely useful, as they 
allow engineers to test each design at all stages of 
development for a relatively low cost, allowing for a better 
design workflow.

In this free webinar, a simulated case of designing the HVAC 
system for a large theater room is demonstrated, and the EN 
15251 standard is used to establish thermal comfort guidelines. 
This standard makes use of special quantities such as PMV and 
PPD, which can be computed as a field and visualized in post-
processing. This type of information gives a powerful overview 
of the required modifications to the design in terms of 
occupant comfort and exemplifies why CFD data can be so useful 
for designing HVAC systems for building design.
