Cobalt V2.0 Released

Posted By: Jim Forsythe
Date:Sat, 26 Apr 2003, 4:38 p.m.

The release of Cobalt version 2.0 includes the following enhancements:

1. 1-DOF and 6-DOF Rigid-Body-Motion Modules – Rigid-Body-Motion can now be performed using forces and moments to determine the motion of the grid.

2. Improvement to Viscous Flux Limiter – This provides better stability in poor quality regions of grids.

3. Support for FieldView 8.2 format – The new unstructured FieldView format allows split grid and results files. If grid motion does not exist, split grid and results files will be written, otherwise they are combined into a single file.

4. External Controller – Rigid-Body-Motion can now be controlled by an external source – such as Matlab providing movement from Cobalt supplied forces and moments. Data is exchanged using HDF files.

5. Improved Arbitrary Motion – A cubic-splined fit to arbitrary motion has been added. This removes slope discontinuities present in previous versions.

6. Membrane Internal Boundary Condition – A membrane is used to impose a planar wall internal to a grid. This has been used to simulate an ocean boundary plane for use with ship motion.

7. Cobalt is now available for export outside of the United States

8. Upgraded to FLEXlm 8.3

9. Additional grid quality checks for Cartesian meshes.

10. Minor Bug Fixes – Several fixes were implemented.

Cobalt is a reliable, accurate, easy-to-use flow solver applicable to geometries of arbitrary complexity. An unstructured flow solver that solves the Euler/Navier-Stokes equations, Cobalt supports rigid-body motion, and Detached Eddy-Simulation for treatment of massively separated flows. Cobalt provides user-friendly capabilities with a pre-processor GUI, solution diagnostics and direct output to commercial post-processors.
