hex meshing volute

Hey guys,
is there anyone, who has already meshed a volute (turbine) and give me some advice what's the best blocking approach? I've meshed the turbine wheel (mixed flow turbine) with ICEM Hexa so far. Thx in advance! |

Agreed, nice work... But you never showed your final topology
This is the official topology from my tips and tricks ppt... It is just half of 1 out of 117 slides... You can get it in the ANSYS customer portal. Of course, this just shows the first step. you would then add the Ogrid thru the volute, etc. VoluteSteps.jpg

no guys, that's not the blocking i used. i ASKED if this is the best blocking in your opinion, not that i was going to use this blocking
my geomtry also included an outer heatshield and a angular stat_rot interface, not just the volute. so it wasn't that easy you can see my blocking in the attached pics. |

I've still have to add the finishing touches (edge params, smoothing etc)
i can't provide blk. and .tin file in general, cause it's property of my company |

Another good "trick" is to create quad elements in the right pattern...
You can create elements manually under the Edit Mesh tab. Just lay them out to form the shape you want, including that little Y block region. Then Extrude them up into Hexa blocks. Then File => Blocking => Load from Unstructured mesh will turn those into a blocking file. Then associate that blocking with your actual volute geometry. Pretty quick way to block a difficult geometry like this.

Hi Fabricio,
before trying something as complex as a volute i suggest you to do the ICEM tutorials. A first flaw i can see in you screen, there seem to be no edge-to-curve or similar associations. Only automatic edge-to-surface can be seen (the white edges). These Associations are fast and easy, but are not easily shaped. Check out the screenshots of energy382. You might notice many green edges, which means it's an edge-to-curve association. Also, you might not need as many radial splits as you did. It's just more work to put all vertices in place. Compare this again with energy382's. For a first attempt to reduce the mess in your blocking, create some circumferential curves for every radial split of your volute to be able to put some edge-to-curve associations.
