"Wedge" mesh - axisymmetric problem

Hello,
I'm performing static structural analysis for pressure vessel modeled as surface body. Im using 1/8 (quarter of half) of the model applying symmetry conditions. Problem seems trivial, however I'm having hard times creating desired mesh. Since mentioned analysis is axisymmetric, I want mesh to maintain symmetry to the axis. The most adequate mesh would be the one with the triangular elements at the apex intersecting the axis of rotation and quadrilateral elements for the rest of the body (called often "wedge" mesh). According to this source: https://www.sharcnet.ca/Software/Ans..._Map_Face.html wedge mesh can be achieved in Ansys (at least for the face of the 3d body). Despite that I couldnt achieve that on my model. The walk-around method is to cut the small hole at the apex intersecting the axis of rotation and then using mapped mesh to create regular, axisymmetric quadrilateral mesh. However such approach leads to stress concetration in the cut area. Attached picture shows mentioned method. Any idea on how to solve this problem? Last edited by sultzan; October 8, 2017 at 17:46. Hi,
Just a question, why don't you not take advantage of 2D axisym elements instead of modelling 1/4 of your geometry? |

Actually Im also willing to invastigate buckling modes, thus whole model must be analysed - buckled shapes may not maintain initial symmetry. Quarter of the half model was just the "test" analysis. The other reason is that shell is created by rotating the 3D curve (line body) imported from text file. The curve is described by complex equation. To perfrom 2D axisymmetrical analysis I would have to create a 2D geometry of the shell's axial cross section. As far as I know it is impossible to create sketch from line body to offset it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Indeed if you want to investigate buckling modes, the full model will be required.
Actually you can create a 2D axial section with imported 3D curve. If you have your line body you simply need to go under Create > Body Transformation > Translate) -> select your line body (your 3D curve) and select the direction vector for the offset. Then you can use a Skin/loft to create your surface. This solution can be a problem if you have more complex line body as you're offsetting it by translating the line body with a direction vector. The other technique I use is to use the Revolve tool, change the option "as Thin/Surface?" to Yes, specify either inwards or outwards thickness > generate. Then you simply need to extract a surface from the solid geometry > Concept > Surface from Face > select the face in the XY plane and generate. That should do the trick |

Thats good to know, I'm really thankful. I'm also starting to think that creating such mesh in Ansys is impossible. My prior FEM software could do that tho

You can create such a mesh with Ansys as well, it just takes a bit of efforts to guide the mesher

Well I would definitely recommend learning ICEM CFD when you have some spare time as you can achieve really complex meshing and you easily have “access” to more advanced meshing capabilities. But let’s keep it simple and proceed with Ansys Meshing.
With this kind of geometry you need to define a proper blocking approach. I would go for a 100% hexa mesh but not rotating it along the axis of symmetry as you’ll end up with degenerated elements at the center (coincident hexa node laying on axis – your current configuration). One option is to use a Quarter-Ogrid approach or Y-block. Here are the steps to create a hexa mesh for a 1/8th geometry using a Y-bloc approach: • > Insert a mapped face and select the front “surface” (i.e. with your sharp angle)

I really appreciate your time and knowledge but thats exactly the mesh that I'm trying to avoid and it was the first one that I tested out. I realize that it is possible to mesh that in many different ways but I'm particulairly interested in axisymmetrical mesh, since analysed issue is axisymmetrical. Thats what I used to do in previous FEM software due to fastest mesh convergence and compatibility with analytical solution.
Just to make things clear you are presenting 1/16th (1/8th of the half) part of the model since the issue concerns closed pressure vessel. Obviously this has no effect on the overall meshing method/result |

Well I just created a quick & dirty model to present the meshing procedure . For sake of clarity, yes it is 1/8th of the half (45° sect. angle), as 1/16th could also mean you take a sector of 22.5°.
May I ask you what your previous FEA software was? You can directly import external meshes into Ansys if it’s an Abaqus or Nastran format. It also depends on the element type and formulation, so did you already try to compare it to your previous results? If you’re concerned about non-symmetrical mesh issues for the stability of your buckling analysis you’re right it may affect the “preferred” buckling plane as you’re introducing a non-symmetrical mesh. Do you mind sharing your geometry? |

My previous FEM software was Siemens NX (Nastran).
I cannot upload the geometry, this site wont let me do that. I attached the images with my current method of meshing that gives pretty good results and the ideal mesh generated in Nastran that I'm trying to achieve in Ansys. I currently don't have access to NX. Sorry for delayed answer. @Edit: I've attached the coordinates file of the exemplary curve. After creating 3D Curve from the file just revolve it about x axis (360 degrees) and mirror about yz plane. Last edited by sultzan; October 11, 2017 at 17:36. |
