Role of Reference area for calculating drag and lift coefficients.

Default Role of Reference area for calculating drag and lift coefficients.

What is the role of reference area and length in the reference values section for 3D simulation of flow past sphere. By default the value is one. If I simulate using the default values of reference area the drag and lift coefficients come out to be zero.
Is it because of the value of reference area that the drag and lift are coming out to be zero?
