First, thank you so much for your interest in my question!

My question is: how to simulate a plasma jet stream that will travel .1437 meters through a fluid domain of air without dissipating. The closest I have gotten is about 1/3 of the way before the plasma dissipates.

Information:

The image shows the result of plasma entering a fluid domain filled with air at 1000 m/s at 300K. I ran the simulation for a total of 600 timesteps at 2.5e-7 second time step size. The rectangular mesh has a width of .0005 meters which gives me a Courant number of .5. I am using a transient model and 2D axisymmetric.

Other conditions:
  • Models: Viscous k-epsilon (2eq) model, Realizable k-e, Scalable Wall Fn
  • Models: Energy and Species Transport on
  • Operating pressure at 0 pa and outlets' gauge pressures at 1 pa
  • Plasma-Air Mixture: Density = volume-weighted-mixing-law. Specific heat = mixing-law. I chose this because plasma and air have different specific heats. Is this the right choice?
  • Solution Methods: This time I used first order discretization. I will try second order once I know the solution is close to being correct.
  • Which Turbulence specification method should I choose for the inlets and outlets?

I will soon be running the simulation again with 5000K at the inlet to better simulate plasma.

Again, thank you very much for any assistance you can give! If you need more information or have any questions about my set up, please ask!
