Default How to view subgrid kinetic energy
Posts: n/a
I am running an LES and I want to view the total turbulent kinetic energy along with the subgrid kinetic energy.

I believe that I must go solve->set->data-sampling and say yes to unsteady statistics

When I run the simulation for a few timesteps, I do not see the subgrid kinetic energy or the total turbulent kinetic energy in the turbulence drop down menu.

Do I need to run for a significant amount of time before these values show up on the menu? Or, is there something else I have to do to turn these features on?

Fluent's transient statistics are piss poor. It only averages a small hand full of hard coded variables. If you need time averages of other variables you need to write your own temporal averaging udf.

In CFX you can obtain transient statistics of any variable with 3 mouse clicks. Ridiculous.

In 12.23: Postprocessing for Turbulent Flows (Fluent Manual)

it states that turbulence quantities that can be reported for the LES model are as follows:

# Turbulence Kinetic Energy

# Turbulence Intensity

# Subgrid Kinetic Energy

# Production of k

I only have about 5 of 18 of these currently available

How do I turn these on? Maybe it is similar to how I turned on the monitoring of residuals by going solve->set->expert

I can't find this info in the fluent manual.

Is it possible that I have to use a different subgrid model other than Smagorinsky to get these other turbulence quantities to appear in Fluent?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
