Drag coefficient in 2D

Hi,
I'm analysing a car's drag using a 2d model. For the frontal area value, because it's a 2D case, i just put the height of the car as the value right which will be in 'm' unit? or should i put the actual frontal area of the car which will be in 'm2' unit? another thing is the Value of 'Depth' in the Reference Value. I notice that the value influence the total force value (using Report>Forces). What value should i put here? the total height of the car? thanks in advance |

I would say, considering a cylinder in the flow benchmark, that the area is simply the height of the car (diameter of the cylinder). It is the area that confronts the flow.
I am not used to fluent,.... but if you are doing FSI, the depth is coming from the structural field. Fluid field in fsi is calculated per meter depth, and if you want to have correct forces transferred to structure, your structure should also have 1m as depth. hope it could help. |

Hi
Use Frontal area of the vehicle (m^2) in the Reference value column tab & For depth use the Car width (m). The input we give ie; frontal area is used to determine the dynamic force of drag coefficient. Fluent by default calculates the drag forces per unit width or depth .
