2D against 3D

In a pipe if there is not a flow in the z direction , can we simulate in 2D instead of 3D?

I do not know what you mean by the z axis without a diagram, but I have seen that most pipe flows are simulated as 2D axisymmetric.

thanks for reply, if u have a pipe with a wing like obstacle how do u simulate it? 2d 3d symmetric axisymmetric?
