I was offered a used system with Dual E5-2650 + S2600CP4 + 16x4GB DDR3 for $600. Is this a good offer ? I plan to use this system for my viscoelastic flow school project. Or should I go with the brand-new, $1000 single i7-6800K/32GBDDR4 system?

That seems like a fairly good deal. However, there might be better offers. The CPUs should be ~50$ each, 8*8GB DDR3-1600 reg ECC can be found for about 160$ and you can get new motherboards for less than 300$. Motherboards are one of the components you should consider buying new because they actually fail sometimes.
If it is a suitable option for you depends on the software you use. If you have enough licenses for 16 cores (or no license issues) and your simulations scale well on a large number of cores this is about the best bang for the buck right now. Otherwise you might be better off with the I7 which offers a much higher performance per core. Last edited by flotus1; December 16, 2016 at 04:25. |
