Hi everyone, I am looking for a workstation build to use for CFD in my PhD research.
- Which software do you intend to use? ANSYS Fluent
- Are you limited by license constraints? No
- What type of simulations do you want to run? Multiphase flow in porous media with conjugate heat transfer and electrochemical reactions. Max cell count of 30M.
- If there is a budget, how high is it? $5000 USD
- What kind of setting are you in? Hobbyist? Student? Academic research? Engineer? Student
- Where can you source your new computer? Buying a complete package from a large OEM? Assemble it yourself from parts? Are used parts an option? I am comfortable with assembling computers myself. I believe I can get used parts approved.
- Which part of the world are you from? USA
- Anything else that people should know to help you better Based on what I've read so far I am leaning towards a dual EPYC workstation from used parts on eBay, particularly the EPYC 7532. An OEM option is this Dell T7820 although I would have to buy more RAM to fully populate the DIMMs as it only comes with 4 sticks. As mentioned before, I'm comfortable with assembling computers however I don't have experience with server components though I imagine it is familiar.
Thank you
