Hi frnds,

I want to write a code for airfoil shape optimization using gradient based methods. I have read some journal papers regarding this, but im unable to figure out how to start. I have good knowledge of CFD, but im not much aware of optimization, parameterization etc...

Is there any text book, paper, reference or guide which explains airfoil shape optimization using gradient based methods in detail covering optimization and parameterization also.

Can anyone of you help me through this???

Share your experience or codes which will help me write my code???

Hi Jaiswal,

There are two ways I guess to approach this problem
1) A long way and 2) A short way

Long way is that you write code for all the required pieces. Short way is you use available pieces and just integrated them together for your optimization problem.

I guess following would be required pieces
1) Parametric definition of airfoil geometry and geometry creator
2) Mesher
3) Solver and post-processor
4) Optimizer

I think the first way would be too long to take. I suggest to go for second method.

I can think of following tools

1) Parametric definition of airfoil geometry and geometry creator - ANSYS GAMBIT
2) Mesher - ANSYS GAMBIT
3) Solver and Post - ANSYS FLUENT

Both above tools has journal feature. So you can automate everything. Find good gradient based optimizer (I guess there are many).

I wrote this code long back and not sure where it is now. But I will try to find and see how can we share that.

You may would like to go through this paper so get some idea about the optimization I tried

Optimization of L/D for ONERA-M6 Wing Using ADIFOR and EULER
