ximik is on a distinguished road
Hello all,

I am looking for any visually pleasing CFD simulations to do as a side project to mess around and learn something outside my typical cup of tea work. I am looking for something that Star-CCM+ or FLUENT can handle pretty easily; the ICs and BCs should be relatively well understood and minimal convergence issues. Basically, I am looking for something that is challenging and interesting, but not super computationally sensitive. Some examples that I was thinking about are:
1) Rayleigh–Taylor instability
2) Kelvin–Helmholtz instability
3) Richtmyer–Meshkov instability

However, I do not know how sensitive above are to IC or BC setup. I think a transient sim is preferred over steady.

Not your typical advice inquiry post, but is CFD related and hopefully interesting!

Thanks!

I can suggest a simple case of bouyancy-based flow...

A 3D cartesian box is filled initially with fluid at the rest and a linear law temperature from bottom to top (stratified steady state). Lateral side are periodic, low wall is at fixed temperature. Then, at top wall you can apply a heat flux outward the domain to cool the fluid at surface so that an instability is onset. You could also superimpose a shear flow at surface to have forced convection.
The simulation is simple but the picture during the evolution is pretty
