Default choice of time step in implicit numerical schemes

Can one choose time step smaller than the spatial grid size?

They are different units and do not compare. Its like asking can I lift weight smaller than 300K .

Ofcourse they have different units but mind explicit scheme and some implicit schemes as well which produce oscillations with such choice of time step mentioned in question, for example Crank-Nicolson scheme.

So basically you are talking about Courant dependency. About how these schemes behave Prof Peric has note in his book. I would rather refer you there.
