What is a fluctuation in flow field and how to generate fluctuation in flow field?

Dear CFDer,

Now I am running with the DNS model but I am not clear about the fluctuation in the flow field. what is its effect on the flow field? and how to generate the fluctuation in the flow field?

could you give me a theory about that and say some a keyword regarding one?

There are infinite possible choice for the decomposition in a mean and a fluctuating part. I suggest to study the theory of the Reynolds averaged decomposition and the theory of LES.
