Namaste to all,
I am doing research work on hydrodynamic effect in liquid storage tank.
Till now, the only thing that I had got that Ansy is only the solution.
The CFD modeling, volume of fluid (VOF). After going through to this forum Open Form could be other option.
Since I am New reader and hoping to get few suggestions.

1. Can free surface modeling of liquid in vessel be done?
2. If so, Will it shows dynamic properties, sloshing
in response to the seismic forces?
3. Will the impact forces could be applied automatically due to movement of liquid?

Do suggest me

I presented a paper at an ASME meeting in Honolulu in 1995. It was very preliminary work. Referee scrutiny was pretty minimal (the hard copy lacked two pages of text and two of figures!!).

I used SOLA-VOF and an acceleration data set located by Dr. Rezvani. The simulation was only two-dimensional. I think the method was pretty straight-forward.

The reference will give you the botched publicatation. I can probably find the complete text if it'll be useful - but it might take a few days. This is very definitely a preliminary look at the problem. I can't distribute the code. But you might be able to get NASA-VOF/2D or /3D. Should be able to start with that. Let me know if the 'complete' paper is of any interest.

Yes, that's what was published. It lacks two pages of theoretical support and two pages of figures. So it's really not of much use.

Hi, I am modeling hydrodynamics of stormwater retention ponds in New Zealand by using ANSYS CFX 11 as my PhD project. The pond I am studying is a rectangular pond with a depth of 0.23m and dimensions of 4.1m*1.5m. The boundary condition which I have applied are as.
Inlet = mass flow rate
Outlet = Pressure outlet with static pressure zero.
Top = symmetry
all other walls= Wall

but I would like to model the top of the pond as a free surface. Can some body advise me how to do this. I have tried tutorial 7 of Bump.2D but I could not understant how the expressions have been made in this tutorial.

Please advise me how can I make the top surface as a moveable free surface?

I downloaded the paper,
and hope to get more suggestions
2-D VOF is only option I have got, But other the paper are published in 3D manner but they are not saying how.
another fact is that programming is not my option in terms of time and resource.
Our college has ansys and it is only the option otherwise Open Form could be one.
On the basis of the software I have to prepare my thesis.

1- Your query is related to a particular programme, you would get response if you post on the Ansys-cfx forum
2- Have you tried open source alternatives? Gerris (http://gfs.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page ) or OpenFOAM
3- Have you tried to contact your support engineer?

The simpler model of liquid tank suggested by ACI code is

Fig1. showing impulsive and convective mass and equivalent spring stiffness

Fig2. Elevated tank model.

Even though It doesn't show true effect of liquid.
Any suggestions on similarities or dissimilarities on spring mass model and liquid FEM modeling are are always welcomed.

Hi, KiM,

I believe that OpenFOAM can do what you are lookin for.

Run tutorial examples under interDyMFoam.

To include the effect of external forces, you can easily revise the interFoam/interDyMFoam source code to add the force terms in the momentum equation.

You can get more help by asking specific questions in the OpenFOAM forum. But, you should spend some time to understand the file strucutures of OpenFOAM first.

I am skeptical that Open Form is Linux based software !
and I have not tried that one till now although it is my safest option.
what I am really thinking is to use fluent as i have enough tutorial for that.
Using Open form meant starting from scratch.

even though completion of my work is of my prime concern and I have to use any one of them any way.

So regarding to this I would like to have suggestion.

DO you successfully simulated rectangular pond under external loading in ansys.
i tried it but not succeeded. can you suggest me how to simulate in ansys.
