I would like to give here a small guide (neither perfect nor exhaustive) for OpenFOAM beginners about how to prepare an OpenFOAM case.

The aim is to speed-up the understanding of OpenFOAM.

Here it is:

  1. Choose a solver compatible with the case to simulate:

  2. Look for an existing case in the OpenFOAM tutorials cases (installed on your computer at the same time than OpenFOAM itself, in the $FOAM_TUTORIALS folder) being the closest to what you want to simulate.

  3. Change the simulation parameters in the system/controlDict file (start time, end time, time step, such things - see and constant/* files (fluid properties, turbulence model, such things - see

  4. Create a mesh thanks to blockMesh ( or snappyHexMesh ( or import an existing mesh (

  5. Modify the type of boundaries in constant/polymesh/boundary file (

  6. Modify the boundary conditions + initial condition in the first time folder (eg. 0). See

  7. Launch the solver.

  8. Post-process with paraFoam.

Here is a tutorial :

Hope this will help people.

Best regards,
