mergePatchFaces no/off issue

I'm trying to create a MR-mesh with sHM. However I want to use adaptiveMeshRefinement on it, which can only work on a mesh consisting of only hexahedral cells. From my understanding setting mergePatchFaces to no, should prevent the creation of polyhedral cells. However, when I run checkMesh it still shows polyhedral cells.

Might this be a bug or is this setting only relevant to the castellation process?

If anyone wants to reproduce the steps, here are my files (Note: I've been using the commands written in runpre(non executable))
