Hi,
I need to simulate the flow over an airfoil. I have to create the mesh with sHM or simply with bM. This is not a great deal, even if I am totally new to OpenFOAM. The problem arises when I need to change the angle of attack. My mesh consists mainly of an external block, an internal cylindrical finer region and the airfoil boundary. I have been told to "simply" split the cylinder from the block, rotate it and then merge it again with the block. I thought I could use splitMesh/splitMeshRegions, then rotateMesh and finally mergeMesh.
Unfortunately I could not even split the mesh into the two parts. I tried following the snappyHexMeshDict of the propeller tutorial, using topoSet to create the cell/faceSet/Zone that I need. The main problem is that I cannot understand much about regions/sets/zones, and I found the UserGuide not exhaustive about this and the utilities I need. I tried following other tutorials but they are far more complex.
Please let me know if there are simple examples that can help me understand this utilities, if you know how to split the mesh or simply if you would work in a different way. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Why not create two separate meshes, one being a cylinder with your airfoil and another being a block from which the cylinder has been subtracted, and the merge the two meshes together?

You could rotate the cylinder with the airfoil separately and then merge it with the other mesh to get your complete mesh...

Cheers,
Antimony

Dear Antymony,

I actually have been asked to find a way to follow that procedure, and learn how to use the relative utilities (topoSet, splitMesh-splitMeshRegions, transformPoints-rotateMesh, mergeMeshes-stitchMesh). Anyway I really appreciated the answer and I will surely proceed in this way if I cannot do what I meant. Thank you.

Regards,
Lorenzo
