Hello all,

I'd like to run a CFD simulation of a propeller. I'm new to openfoam, but I'm working my way through several openfoam tutorials, trying to get myself acquainted. The thing is, all of them cover flow over a static geometry.... as in, flow over a wing, around a plane, etc. I imagine I need to do something special to simulate flow over a propeller, but since I never calculated propellers in my life, it's a much steeper learning curve for me than openfoam over a wing or around a plane. I could use some help and guidance.

Best regards,

Misha

Hi!

I think you have missed a tutorial:
tutorials/incompressible/pimpleDyMFoam/propeller

It can be a starting point from the OF side.

When looking for further information, you may also look for wind turbine modelling with OpenFoam. It's very similar, in terms of "you model rotating blades". And the wind energy research community is very active in using OpenFoam and CFD in general.

For example, i found this link, which is providing a wind turbine tutorial with a dynamic mesh.

Very sweet! Thank you both for your replies! Like i said - I'm new to OpenFoam, that's a steep enough learning curve for me, put propeller design on top of that, and it gets a little tough to wrap my head around it all. I suppose I just have to keep grinding away at it. Eventually I'll get there =)
