Hi guys,

I am using icoFoam to solve the laminar nwetonian flow in a contraction, to benchmark foam and to learn how to use it. Is it possible to use simpleFoam, a steady state solver, to do it, and if so, what should I do?

Yes, set the turbulence model to laminar and choose appropriate transport model.

Hi Titio,

Long, long time ago, you posted this message about you using icoFoam to solve Newtonian flow in a contraction.
I'm trying to do the same, but it just won't work; I keep getting strong oscillations just upstream of the contraction and then the calculation blows up. I already tried using an upwind scheme instead of a linear one, finer mesh, coarser mesh, smaller time step, etc. My Reynolds number is something far smaller than 1, so that shouldn't be the problem. Also, potentialFoam seems to work alright, although the streamlines seem a bit messy, but even using this solution as an initial condition doesn't help.
The same flow in viscoelasticFluidFoam runs without any trouble, so I tried using the same settings for fvSchemes and fvSolution in icoFoam, but without any result.
So, I was wondering, do you still remember how you solved your Newtonian contraction flow with icoFoam? Did you run into any problems?
