lamboot starts up one process ("lamd") per processor if I remember correctly so you will see two processes. Don't see why they should not communicate to one another. We run shared memory machines...

semops are used by mpi when you run on a shared memory machine. Things to check:
- are you picking up the correct (i.e. OpenFOAM) mpi libraries or are you using the system ones...
