Yes I definitely tried it otherwise I would not post it here. I am attaching a test case. You can run this using icoFoam. Then look for sampled data under time folders and not the postProcessing...

It is an old thread but I thought the answer may help others who are looking for this feature. OpenFOAM 4.1 has an option called volRegion which can be used as a a functionObject in the controlDict....
