Mmmm... If I understand you correctly, you're trying to use ParaView 3.12.0 with OpenFOAM 1.7.1.
And according to your description, I suppose you can't have two separate terminal...

Since it's OF 2.0 + PV 3.10.1, try run it like this:paraFoam -builtinThis will use the ".foam" internal reader that comes with ParaView.

As for the ".OpenFOAM" reader, it will depend...
