for a general reaction C_xH_y + a O_2 -> b CO_2...

for a general reaction
C_xH_y + a O_2 -> b CO_2 + c H_2O
balancing C, H and O atoms.
C: x = b -> b= x
H: y = 2c -> c = y/2
O: 2a = 2b + c -> a = b + c/2 = x + y/4
