I never had problem with STEP import (from ProE)...

I never had problem with STEP import (from ProE) :D. (no need to use Clean Up tool)

step file import, should generate real geometry....

step file import, should generate real geometry. (in my case with ProE Wildfire 3)
Are also getting real geometry just after the import?
