Look for a section called Devi

Look for a section called Device in your /etc/xorg.conf file. Just before the EndSection part, add the SWCursor line as shown below:

Section "Device"

-----
-----
Option "SWCursor"...

I used to think that paraView

I used to think that paraView would automatically default to software rendering should it not find any hardware GLX support in the Xserver. Maybe I was wrong. You could always try enabling software...

does anyone knows that this is also the right thing to try for my case above?

Not yet. Try that only if paraFoam crashes when trying to save...
