Hey all,

We currently use ANSYS, mainly Fluent sometimes CFX, at the company I work at for all our CFD problems, and use the CFD post for all the post-processing.

In my master's degree we used tecplot 360 and I'm trying to argue that we should include it into our software library but I've been asked to give reasons why it would be worth the cost.

Other than my general view that it has higher applicability in data manipulation and makes cooler looking pictures I was hoping someone would be able to quantify the differences between the two a bit better than I can!

Cheers!

Tecplot 360 customers that I've spoken with say they use Tecplot 360 over CFD Post because they can:
  • load and compare results from different data sources and data formats (e.g., CFD data and test/experimental data),
  • generate both quantitative XY/2D plots as well as 3D volume plots and animations in one application,
  • create and export publication quality plots for reports and presentations,
  • perform additional post processing calculations and analysis of the flow field,
  • extract flow features such as vortex cores, shock surfaces and vortex cores,
  • examine and analyze collections of results (parametric/optimization studies, design space studies, operating envelopes, etc.
  • provide a cost-effective post processing solution to colleagues and teammates that need to analyze the data without tying up an expensive Fluent license.

And now with Tecplot 360 2017 R1 and newer this can all be automated with PyTecplot, our new Python API.

Thanks,
Scott Fowler
