Topic: Flow turbulence near solid surfaces very significantly increases drag and
sound emissions. There are applications everywhere: land vehicles, boats,
submarines, aircraft, rivers and the earth's turbulent boundary layer and more.
The dynamics of drag and the way it results from the dynamics of the turbulence,
in particular the way that turbulence dissipates kinetic energy and momentum,
remain areas of knowledge where little is confidently known. Recent advances
from Vassilicos et al concerning the non-equilibrium dynamics of turbulent flow
dissipation raise new questions and suggest new approaches which have not yet
been applied to wall turbulence. This project will study these dynamics and
relate them to skin friction drag by analyzing very high fidelity computer
simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flows and turbulent boundary layers. Even
though the objective is to answer some fundamental questions, the consequences
on aerodynamics in transportation industries can be very broad and the questions
addressed in this thesis may have significant outcomes in terms of energetic
performances of vehicles.

Location : The PhD is linked to a wider project (including 4 PhD and 2
Post-docs) which will take place at LMFL in the University of Lille. The CNRS
fellowship is for 3 years.

The research Lab :  Le LMFL ( is a research
laboratory with up to 35 Faculties, Researchers, Enginners and Technicians in
fluid mechanics and aerodynamics from five institutions including  ONERA (the
french aerospace lab),  CNRS,  two technical universities (ENSAM, Centrale
Lille) and the University of Lille. 

Candidate : Ideally, the candidate will be graduated in fluid mechanics, physics
or applied mathematics and will have a particular interest on numerical simulation.
