PhD Positions in NASA-UK Collaborative Research Projects: High-Speed Nonlinear FSI and Hypersonics.

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Laboratory at the University of Kentucky (UK) is looking for
highly motivated PhD students for several NASA-funded research projects. The research projects involve:
(1) high-speed nonlinear FSI with application to supersonic parachute modeling for Mars landing, (2)
laminar-turbulent transition prediction modeling for free-flight disturbance environments in hypersonic
flows, (3) fluid-ablation interaction (FAI) modeling for vehicle atmospheric entry. The University of
Kentucky provides excellent computational resources (UK HPC) and other external high performance
computing centers are available to the research group. The numerical method development, hypersonics
and FSI research is conducted in close collaboration with researchers of The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). Within this research, summer internship opportunities at NASA are possible.

Application requirements: Candidates need to have a degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Aerospace),
Physics or Applied Mathematics with a strong background in CFD, numerical methods and fluid dynamics.
Candidates with programming skills (C, C++, Fortran, CUDA) are preferred.

If interested, please send a detailed CV, cover letter, and grade transcripts to
You should also consider sending two letters of recommendation to support your application.

Closing date for applications: Generally open until a suitable candidate is found. Note that for international
applications the application deadline for this fall semester is coming up shortly. Contact me as soon as
possible to initiate the process.
