TitlePhD on Large Eddy Simulation for airflows inside buildings
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerNorwegian University of Science and Technology
LocationNorway, Trondheim
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateTuesday, April 09, 2019
The Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology has a vacancy for a 3-year PhD
scholarship on “Large Eddy Simulation for airflows inside buildings”.

The PhD work will be done in close collaboration between two research groups
at EPT. The sustainable energy systems (SES) group has a strong experience
in heating, cooling and ventilation systems in buildings, including building
performance simulation (BPS). The thermo-fluids group has a broad focus on
fundamental and applied research in fluid dynamics, including computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) and turbulence modelling. The PhD work aims at taking
advantage of the synergy between both research groups and disciplines.

The knowledge of building airflows is widely used to design high-performance
buildings. In this respect, CFD is a powerful tool to study and predict
airflows inside buildings. Nowadays, CFD in building is mostly performed
using Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stoves (RANS) modelling and low-order
numerical methods. However, both strategies are not optimal for building
airflows. Therefore, the objective of this research work is to enable high-
fidelity CFD in buildings using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and high-order
numerical methods. The PhD will focus on the flow physics and turbulence
modelling specific to building airflows while the geometrical complexity
will be kept relatively simple.
