Latest CFX-5 release leverages ANSYS technology to bring integrated tools into engineering design cycle

SOUTHPOINTE, Pa., May 11, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- ANSYS, Inc. (Nasdaq: ANSS), a global innovator of simulation software and technologies designed to optimize product development processes, today announced the release of CFX-5.7, an industry-leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. ANSYS, Inc. continues to provide customers with superior and accessible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to improve processes, solve performance issues and vastly reduce product time to market.

Companies around the world -- in a wide range of industries including aerospace, chemical processing, power generation, automotive, oil and gas, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and many others -- depend upon CFX software. The latest release of CFX-5 continues the rapid advancement in CFD core technology development and leverages the ANSYS technology to increase integration into the engineering design cycle.

"I use CFX-5 because it allows easy application of complex physics and delivers accurate multiphase simulations. Using CFX-5.7, I can solve problems involving business-critical, long transient bubble column models 25 percent faster," said Wayne Strasser, senior chemical engineer at Eastman Chemical Company.

The industry-leading CFD technology in CFX-5 now has been enhanced by the integration of ANSYS tools. CFX-5.7 can include ANSYS DesignModeler for geometry creation or CAD import along with a special version of ANSYS ICEM CFD, which provides a proven meshing capability that is well known for its exceptional robustness when applied to industrial CAD models. Another ANSYS meshing tool, CFX-Mesh, has been implemented in the ANSYS Workbench Environment and will continue to deliver high-quality CFD meshes for accurate flow and heat transfer predictions that require boundary layer resolution in the near wall region.

In cases where the interaction of a fluid around the solid is important -- such as valve opening -- CFX-5.7 includes the introduction of a fluid structure interaction (FSI) capability. A simple to use, one-way transfer of data from a CFX solution to ANSYS, provides for seamless passing of information between a fluid and structural simulation. For a more complex fluid structure interaction -- such as large-scale solid deformation or motions where bi-directional effects are important -- CFX-5 can interact dynamically with ANSYS stress analysis.

CFX-5.7 includes many extensions in physical models, permitting an ever- broader range of applications. For example, new Lagrangian coal and droplet combustion models allow the simulation of important processes in the power generation industry. New turbulence models that predict laminar to turbulent transition increase the accuracy of heat transfer effects simulation.

"The latest version of CFX-5 continues to provide advanced CFD capabilities to our customers while becoming more interoperable with other ANSYS tools," noted Dr. Michael Raw, vice president of CFX Product Development. "The industrial environment today requires fast answers and the reliable interaction between many technologies to provide successful simulation solutions. We are working actively on our ongoing integration into the ANSYS product family."
