Hi,

I need to split the helical coil model in ANSYS DM into two volumes. That is a coil length of L meter should be divided into L1 and L2 meter. I have tried creating a plane, but it divides into many number of volumes. I need to create a circular cross sectional plane which splits the entire volume into two sections/volumes

Please help me

Thanks

Dear Attique Javaid,

Thank you very much for the reply. It worked. I could divide the geometry. My problem is in meshing. The geometry which I am dealing is a helical coil wound in the shape of hemisphere (see attachment).
I have problem in meshing. I could generate sweep mesh, but the quality is very poor. The length of the tube is very large (Length of the tube /Diameter of the tube is very large (in 100s). I have attached the image of the mesh generated. Also when I split the geometry, I could not see any sweepable bodies.
Please help me.

i'll suggest you divide your geometry in small parts (about 4 in each loop). single loop of long length probably that's the issue. as far as 2 volumes are required, as you said earlier, may be you want two different material assignments. just create small volumes and mesh. assign material to collectively those volume which belong to same material.

meshing will be at ease if you divide it in small parts in my opinion.

Thanks for your reply. It is single material. When I divide the volume into two, I could not see sweepable bodies. I want sweep mesh for the model.
Please help.

Whats wrong with a test mesh? Works the same.

Is this for CFD or structural analysis.

Hi hwet,
Thanks for the reply. It is for CFD analysis.

You can use a tet mesh with inflation at the walls, you will get the same results you will with a hex mesh.

I am not a CFD expert but many experts I have talked to believe that tet mesh is the way to go with CFD.

Hex meshing was basically meant for mechanical problems. Dont trouble yourself trying to make a hex mesh, you might get one at the end for you geometry, but in the future you might have to come across very complex geometries, it is not worth the effort to trying to make a hex mesh, when you can get the same results with a tet, just dont forget the add inflation enough to solve your boundary.

Hi hwet,

Thanks for your suggestion. You are correct. When I split the geometry, I could get hex mesh only at the top end. I'll try your suggestion.

If I use tet mesh, I am not getting desirable results. I am interested in creating sweep mesh for entire geometry with desirable mesh quality. Please suggest.

Desirable results in mesh quality or the actual post simulation results.

Also tet mesh needs inflation layers on the walls and then it will give you good results.

Thanks for your reply. I am doing flow analysis in helical coil of the geometry shown in the previous post. It is desirable to get secondary flow as shown in the attachment.

I have created sweep mesh for helical coil with 8mm coil diameter. It was successful and could get good results. I am trying to create mesh (sweep) for 6mm and 10mm coils (each are of different lengths when compared to 8mm coil). I am unable to get proper sweep mesh at certain portions of the coil (as shown in previous post).

Please suggest to overcome this problem in creating uniform sweep meshing along the length of the coil.

Regards
