Hi, I am fairly new to CFD and have spent the last 4 months learning how to use ANSYS 16.2 (CFX). I would like to avoid using ICEM as I have had so many licensing issues with it and I find it very frustrating to use.

I want to set up a dynamic mesh zone around an insect-like wing, so that I can rotate it around the Z-axis. The wing and cylinder are automatically tetra meshes, whereas the rest of the fluid appears to be hexa.

I have divided up the fluid domain in order to determine the mesh density/sizing in the fluid domain surrounding the wing. I need the mesh to be finer in the wake of the wing and directly around it. However, I am struggling to mesh the area directly around the wing (the cylinder). I think this is due to how sharp the edges of the structure are (wing thickness = 1% of the wing length).

I have changed the maximum angle to 180 degrees and have applied layer compression to limit the effect of the sharp edges being close to sides of the cylindrical domain (this seems to have helped). I have had to turn off the advanced size function as it prevented me from altering the body sizes locally, resulting in a wing mesh that was too coarse. I have attached screenshots of my settings for further detail.

I am still unable to get a good quality mesh round the wing. Any advice on how to go about setting up this mesh (or any glaringly obvious mistakes that I’ve made) would be much appreciated as I have a strict deadline for my masters and my computer takes hours to generate the mesh each time so trial and error is no longer an option really. The solution to my problem is probably very simple, but I’m inexperienced so I’m finding it very difficult.

Please note that after my last attempt at meshing the sizing in the outer fluid domain regions was changed, I am planning on altering the body sizing once I have resolved the issue within the cylinder.
