I am modelling a solar air heater duct with turbulators in 3D in Ansys Fluent 14.5. Problem is, The iterations are taking too long per model(approx a half a month). So I wanted to know If I it is possible to have a 2D model which will give me reasonably close results as the 3D one. I tried making a 2D model and tried several combinations, but it is not working. I am using k omega sst model. I have heat flux at the top, but when I use the same heat flux value in 2D, it is not giving me the same results. The temp at the top is coming at 700 something degree celsius, which is not possible for a solar heater device.

P.S. I am no CFD or Fluent expert as yet so please try to keep it simple for me

Hi there,
We are an Engineering solution firm involved into CFD simulations. Regarding the 2D approximation, we need to take a look at the geometry whether is it possible to approximate as 2D or not. If your duct is symmetric about both principal axes, then it might suit to calculate using 2D flow.
