Hi everyone,

i am a student at the beginning with CFD and I've just sterted using OpenFOAM. I need to create a mesh starting from a .stl file of a swirler: my doubt regards the fact it is an open volume so I am wondering if I need to close it in order to create a 3D mesh or not. Can somebody help me and tell me which is the best way to create it and import in OpenFOAM?

Sorry for my lack of experience.
Thanks a lot.

Stefano

Try using cfMesh.
Stl are not a good idea though, I suggest you to import it in Salome, export each face as stl and then use cfMesh to mesh it.

As an STL geometry is made of pure triangles, it would probably be quicker to remake the geometry in Salome and then export the faces from the new solid!

Thank you for answering

I thought the same thing but since the file I have is composed by 738 faces I am hoping to find a solution which doesn't require to remake the solid. Are there any OpenSource software capable of recognizing an empty volume creating a mesh for this?

Thanks again.

Hi Stefano,

I suggest to use ICEM for meshing and then you can import it to OpenFOAM by using fluentMeshToFoam command.

You can also send your quick enquiry to http://workshopwale.com/ or can email a brief description of your case to adarsh@workshopwale.com

Regards,
Workshopwale Team!!
