I know that when stream lines are close it implies a region of high velocity and when the stream lines are far apart it implies a region of low velocity.
But when a stream line plot is made in CFD Post, the distribution of stream lines is just dependent on the number of points chosen in the settings. So could someone please explain how to locate regions say sparsely populated with streamlines, I mean by doing away with this sensitivity to the number of points in the settings.

Why not just look at the velocity magnitude and see the areas of low velocity directly rather than inferring them from the streamlines?

you can define plane on the are which you intersted. ANd from this plane you can define streamlines
