Hi,

In a steady state simulation it is a psuedo-timestep. It is used to advance the simulation towards convergence and it is based on a physical timestep, but it has several simplifications so is not a true timestep. These simplifications include not including some transient cross-terms and the ability to advance different equations at different rates. This means an intermediate solution is not equivalent to a transient solution, only the final converged solution is relevant.

There was a very good summary of this posted a while back, I think posted by Cyclone (not sure) but I can't seem to find it with the search. It described in detail the simplifications made in a steady state simulation.
