I am going to build a cfd system soon. Eventually I will be running simulations of high speed boats with aero and hydro with waves and such. I am wondering where to start with hardware. Would it be better to start with a desktop or server. I have thought about starting with a rackmount computer so I can expand easily later on.....or would it be better to just buy two desktops. I want to spend about 1k to get started. I'm not sure how intensive what i want to simulate is either. There are a couple videos online of what i want to be able to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al-f9zODwjI. I am willing to start on my laptop doing a wing in ground effect or may just a hull going through smooth water but I will be investing in a computer soon. What is the best way to start??

Don't buy a rackmount server if it is going to live in the space where you will be working. These things are very, very noisy. It comes from using tiny high speed fans to force cooling air through flat chassis.

Just a little comment: Im shocked that they use 8 days with 3000 cores to simulate.
