Hello,
I want to buy a PC to perform 3D simulation (tubular heat exchangers) with openfoam. Large CHT models or buyoant solver with or without surface to surface radiations. I have approx 1000 €. I am a total beginner, a friend advises me for the following set up: - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Wraith Stealth (3.7 GHz / 4.6 GHz) - 400€ - AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD 500 Go - 124 € - MSI B550-A PRO - 150 € - Textorm 32 Go (2x 16 Go) DDR4 3200 MHz CL16 - 158 € - Antec VP600P PLUS - 65 € - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti OC Low Profile 4G - 175 € Do you think that is a correct choice? If you cannot buy used then your suggestion is fine I think.
On my 3700X there was a huge improvement when using tight memory timings according to the Ryzen DRamCalculator. 3200 MHz CL16 is pretty poor memory, but at your price point you may not have much choice. However, for 1000 Euro you can also purchase a used dual Xeon 2673v3 computer. The 5600X will not even be close to that performance. |

Thank you for your comments.
I search used CPU and motherboard on Aliexpress website. I found this: Motherboard: SZMZ X99 DUAL Z8 E-ATX 8 channels DDR4 LGA 2011-3 + 2 CPU : Intel E5 2678 V3 price = 305 € There the same offer + the RAM: 8*16gb DDR4 2400MHZ ECC REG price = 624 € I think it is a low price but I don't know if it is a good idea to buy used RAM, (specifications of the RAM is not witten) Which X99 motherboard do you recommend ? There is plenty of different I see on youtube some videos telling that the setup 2 E5 2678 V3 + X99 is not suited for gaming compared to modern other set up. For cfd it could be a good economic choice, isn't it ? Is it a ready to use material or is there lot of tricks to make it work ? I am a little bit afraid. Hello,
I found this sentence on Comsol website: "Mid-range CPUs, such as the Intel® Xeon® W, or AMD® Ryzen™ Threadripper™, processors, do not have CPU-to-CPU interconnects and are thus an appropriate choice for a single-CPU computer. They do have comparable clock speeds and core counts as high-end systems. They are an attractive all-around choice." And "High-end CPUs, such as the Intel® Xeon® Gold and Platinum, or AMD® EPYC®, processors have CPU-to-CPU interconnects that enable multiple CPUs per computer, and allow the CPUs to communicate with each other to access very large amounts of memory" It is true that Xeon is not appropriate for dual-CPUs computer? If yes, why did you recommend this for Openfoam ? Julien |

"Xeon" is a label Intel uses for a whole zoo of different processors.
Some of them can be used in dual-socket operation (some even more, like 4 or 8), and some lack that capability. The source you quoted explicitly mentions the Xeon W lineup, which is single-socket only. |

Yes, that's about as good as it gets right now in terms of price/performance.
And don't worry, Xeon E5-2678 v3 is one of those CPUs that can be used in dual-socket configurations. |

I think with 1k euros you can find really half decent used components. I have 2x Xeon 6cores each, a bit older model but it works fine.
My only recommendation, and that's only my personal point of view, is to spend less on the graphics card and more on the memory. Unless you're into other stuff too and you need this particular GPU.

Hello,
Does someone can help me to find a tutorial, or advise to configure the bios on SZMZ X99 Z8 with OS Ubuntu 20.04? I don't find a example on this. Best regards |

https://github.com/BIOS-iEngineer/SZMZ-X99-Dual-Z8
Miyconst has lots of videos on how to turbo boost unlock for Xeon v3 processors. Also, some of the Chinese motherboards benefit from a bios replacement per the above link. I am not the expert on this, but you may want to have a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH9V6LHAHCM |
