maybe I misunderstand the requirement, the images above are all combinations bitmapped line/half-tone, so the only choice is the jpg?

Honestly, I would import your file into something like Tecplot or Paraview (the latter is open source and free), and export from that. That way you will have much more freedom of choosing the specifics of your graphic. I think Paraview can even do EPS format.
