Hello all,

First off, let me start by saying that I realize Ubuntu is not a supported OS for StarCCM+, and my life would be easier if I were using a supported OS, but I would like to use StarCCM+ on my Ubuntu machine to allow working on multiple projects in other software at the same time.

I have downloaded StarCCM+ v2206 from the Siemens Support Center and installed it successfully on my machine (a Dell 5570 laptop with a 12th gen i7 proc running Ubuntu 22.04) with the provided script. I don't believe there are any issues with the installation process itself, as I can successfully start StarCCM+ and carry out all of my normal pre-processing steps.

However, trying to load any sort of scene / visualization (e.g. starting a sim and viewing residuals, looking at the mesh, etc.) causes an immediate crash and the program exits with the following error:

Code:
LLVM ERROR: Do not know how to split the result of this operator!
When launching Star, I also get several non-fatal errors in the log file:

Code:
libGL error: MESA-LOADER: failed to open iris: /usr/lib/dri/iris_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (search paths /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri:\$${ORIGIN}/dri:/usr/lib/dri, suffix _dri)
libGL error: failed to load driver: iris
libGL error: MESA-LOADER: failed to open swrast: /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (search paths /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri:\$${ORIGIN}/dri:/usr/lib/dri, suffix _dri)
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
libGL error: MESA-LOADER: failed to open iris: /usr/lib/dri/iris_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (search paths /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri:\$${ORIGIN}/dri:/usr/lib/dri, suffix _dri)
libGL error: failed to load driver: iris
libGL error: MESA-LOADER: failed to open swrast: /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (search paths /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri:\$${ORIGIN}/dri:/usr/lib/dri, suffix _dri)
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 149 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 31
Current serial number in output stream: 32
So, I was hoping someone here has run into this issue previously and found a workable solution. Googling the error codes didn't reveal anything that I thought was pertinent, but I'm far from an expert.

Thanks,
Kellis

To anyone in the same boat: it seems that including the "-mesa" flag upon startup fixes this issue, e.g.:

Code:
/path/to/star/binary/starccm+ -mesa -other -options

But from what I remember from the user guide - mesa is the slowest (software-rendered) graphics.

Thanks for the hint, but as mentioned it will force the software render. Anyone found a solution to overcome this issue and use a dedicated GPU?
I'm pretty much in the same boat, but running Rocky Linux which is officially supported and visualizing the server through a remote connection.
